The purpose of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is to help rectify the main imbalances between regions in the Community, acting within the context of a global and integrated strategy of sustainable development and guaranteeing a synergy with the interventions of other Structural Funds. Although the main purpose of ERDF is to provide support for objectives 1 and 2 of the structural funds, the ERDF must also help finance cross-border, trans-national and inter-regional co-operation and the economic and social regeneration of cities and suburbs in crisis, based on Community initiatives, and to support innovative, Community-wide measures.
